(More On A Very Positive Thread) The Best Radio Idea Of 2006-2007

When I heard of Edison Research's "30 under 30" competition, that was the headline I used. Now, I'd like to use it again for this equally-exciting development: Sixteen communication majors at Appalachian State University attended the inaugural Kellar Radio Farm System Institute hosted by the Department of Communication. During the 10-day institute, students heard from a variety of broadcast professionals including (pictured) James K. Flynn, a 1977 Appalachian graduate and former radio personality, and Ray Mariner, afternoon co-host on Atlanta’s Star 94FM. Students in the institute learned about on air work, news, writing, sales, traffic, programming, management, ownership and other aspects of the industry.

The program was established to serve as a farm system for future radio broadcasters. It is directed by Dan Vallie, one of the radio industry’s top consultants, and general manager of campus radio station WASU in the Department of Communication.

Big kudos to Art, Dan and the other faculty at this summer's event, Beasley Broadcast CEO George Beasley, Lincoln Financial VP/Programming John Dimick, Curtis Media President Phil Zachary, Talentmasters CEO Don Anthony, WFBC-FM/Greenville PD Chase Murphy, WSPA-WGVC/Greenville OM Mark Hamlin, WORD-WYRD/Greenville PD Bob McLain, Beasley Regional VP Danny Highsmith and CBS/Charlotte Marketing Director Natalie Kirby.
